HIV & AIDS Awareness Campaign by Denim Club India :: Part 2
Denim Club India
Part 1 Part 3
Unfortunately it is not just money which the migrants bring back to the Ganjam district.

Till December 2007, Ganjam district accounted for 35 per cent of the total AIDS related deaths and 37.8 per cent of a total of 8,200 People Living with HIV in Orissa, according to Orissa State AIDS Control Society(OSACS). According to latest figures released by the OSACS on the occasion of World AIDS Day in December, 2009, as many as 1,083 persons have so far died due to AIDS in Orissa while Ganjam has had highest number of casualties with 349 deaths. Ganjam with 5920 HIV positive patients, tops the list for highest number of PLHIV's in the state.

It might be quite shocking to note, but, it is a hard fact that in the very near future the textile and apparel industry shall feel the impact of this virus -which was discovered around 1986 in India - as it starts making groups of trained workers unproductive, due to a syndrome of various opportunistic disease conditions showing up, all of a sudden, in these people and no medication or treatment proving to be of any help or use .

The "migrant vulnerability to HIV" and its subsequent fall-out in spreading of the virus to women and children "back home", and further to the male population living there, replicates itself in other places as well. There are studies which reflect the same picture in Amritsar( in Punjab), and Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nasik, etc. in Maharashtra.

All that we now need to do is to take a second look and realize that the textile industry employs migrant labor in large numbers. It is important that all of us get ready to face, and handle, this alarming situation, and also make sure that we do whatever needs to be done to stop or minimize the spread of this deadly virus amongst our work-force, staff, and their families.

The campaign being run by Denim Club India has been initiated with the objective of addressing the following issues:
  • Raising Awareness Level about HIV & AIDS
  • Prevention of further spread of HIV
  • Acceptance of People Living with HIV
  • Access to care and treatment for People Living with HIV
  • Rehabilitation and employment of People Living with HIV
The beneficiaries of the DCI's HIV & AIDS Awareness Campaign are the OWNERS and WORKFORCE of textile, apparel and retail industry, and the families of the workers, left behind at home.

Understanding the HIV Threat At Workplace

All organizations depend on the skills and experiences of their employees at all levels (from shop-floor workers to senior managers) to be productive, efficient and profitable. The work-force in any industrial organization is a major asset, which needs to be nurtured and cared-for on a continuous basis.
