The journey of denim starts from cotton, and passes through various stages before a consumer gets to pick up a pair of jeans from the retail counter. In order to make it easy for the denim professionals to comprehend the denim value chain, Denim Club has identified and listed various segments in this section. The Value Chain section in the Denim Resource Center is by far the one and only structured compilation of not just the segments but also the businesses that relate to the specific segments. The resource makes it possible for the denim professionals to identify, locate and connect with the vendors and prospective customers with just a few clicks of the mouse. Check it out!

The Denim Value Chain
Having originated in Europe, denim’s function and adaptable form lead to making of jeans in United States, which have over the years become a wardrobe staple, across the globe. Behind every pair of denim jeans or a jacket made of denim, there is a an extensive value chain, comprising of several highly specialized segments, each having its own set of experts, spread out in different countries, associated with different business houses and corporates.
4 main parts of the denim supply chain :: fibre production, fabric manufacturing, garment manufacturing and retail sales

The journey of denim starts from cotton, and passes through various stages before a denim garment reaches the retail store. This section attempts to present a comprehensive view of the complex and wide spread value chain for denim, by identifying the various segments and processes that make it possible for all of us to be able to pick up that pair of jeans or jacket from the retail shelves.

The denim value chain can be broadly seen as comprising of four parts:
  • Fibre Production
  • Fabric Manufacturing
  • Garment Manufacturing
  • Retail Sales
Fibre Production
At the top of the supply chain, there are fiber producers using either natural or “man-made” (synthetic) materials. Cotton, the main constituent of denim, is a natural fibre, and polyester is a synthetic fibre.
Fabric Manufacturing
Raw fiber is spun into yarn and then woven into fabric by the second segment, usually called textile mills. In the case of denim, the yarn used along the length (warp) is mostly dyed before it is woven into fabric. Conventionally, the warp for denim is dyed using indigo.

Garment Manufacturing
The third segment of the supply chain is the apparel manufacturers or manufacturers of industrial textile products. The manufacturing of garments, starts with designing and pattern making, followed by cutting of fabric and then stitching of various pieces, along with the various trims and accessories, into a garment.
Retail Sales
The final segment, comprising of retailers, makes the finished apparel available to consumers, through a wide variety of channels.
